This is the unfinished 58 caliber Barracuda Bullpup from Barnes Pneumatic. The barrel and barrel hub are blued steel. The reservoir and hammer tube are stainless steel. All of the billet will be hard color anodized during the finish phase.

It's now in "field testing" phase. It's clear now, that the gun will be able to make about 700 foot pounds of muzzle energy with heavier slugs. It's default slug of approx. 331 grains (a light weight 58) now shoots at 920 fps, for about 621 foot pounds of muzzle energy. More testing will tell it's capabilities.

The gun has already proved to be extremely accurate. This is THE one and only group I've yet shot at 100 yards with the gun.

Thanks for looking.

I realized, today, that I'd overlooked having a section on the Prairie 3 bench rifle. That's a shame, as it's my finest 32 dedicated bench rifle. Therefore; here is a brief lay-out on the gun.
I ran the gun up to ... 278 fpe I believe, on the shop testing. It's proven to be a great long range gun. It's quite easy to take out any target out to 150 yards or so. The gun is power adjustable, so it's often shot at a home range of 43 yards. Being moderated, and power adjustable, it's tunable for a lot of environments.

All of the aluminum billet is hard color anodized.
(I had to go earlier - didn't get to finish the post). I ran a bluing cycle for a number of parts I needed recently. During the session, I re-blued the Hoss while it was back in my shop after five years in the field. The maintenance included changing out all seals while it was torn down. This one actually has been shot alot. Everything was in good shape. It's good to go again.
Here's the orig. pencil sketch. Everything is origonal artwork.

It's been a rainy weekend, and I've had several nasty, lingering headaches ... so I haven't packed up for the range. I've been doing a few "sit down" sessions to start the carving on the Caribou stocks. Yeah - I know ... I'm worse than an old woman with aches and pains ... but ... carving with your eyes crossed is a special skill ... developed over time ... thru practice.

I shot the gun yesterday, thru the muzzler and bullet trap, for 530 foot pounds with the 446 grain slug. I tried some "buck ball" - swaggged from .490" ball, and they screamed.

The gun cocks via a top lever set into the buttstock. Works wonderful.
It's a beast. Far more accurate than anybody would believe. We were shooting it yesterday. No problem at all to hit targets out 76-114 yards. It just pounds them to dust. I've tuned the gun to shoot it's 924.02 grain pure lead slug @ approx. 840 foot pounds of muzzle energy. It speaks with authority! ::o

No testing today. It stormed all night, and continues today. It's put down huge amounts of water - the lane road and field will be severely flooded.

Pretty to watch though.

I began a carving project. I worked on it late last night ... and I've carved all day.

Started with a rough pencil sketch ...

Progressed to an exploratory carving

To stages of refinement ...

This is nearly complete.

It is, or course, the butt stock of the Grizzly 62 rifle. Seemed a good rainy day project. While my hip didn't mind sitting, instead of standing, on this rainy day ... it's had enough now, for awhile. ;)

Different exposures ...

Hope you enjoyed seeing some additional work in progress.
The walnut has a natural overlaying "scale" pattern and coloration. Careful attention was given to the placement of the stock pattern on the plank, to take best advantage of the grain. It's worked out really well for the Dragon.

I've removed alot of wood from the Dragon gun's stock, and ... look what I found inside!

The stock isn't finished, but it's 2/3rds there.

Yesterday, it rained from about 2:30 on here. Prior to that, Jerry and his son Timmy, had come up to help me with some casting, and perhaps shoot some if it didn't storm. Jerry cast for about 3 hours, while I fit the newly assembled Dragon action into the stock. We set up at the field about 3pm, and it began to rain as we finished setting up. It then rained for the next four hours, while we shot. We tore down camp in the rain, and progressed back to the house for dinner ... looking like a pack of nearly drowned rats.

A good time was had by all! (:P) haha. We did get a bunch of good video and stills. They'll be posted later. This was a special opportunity for Jerry to share the guns with his son Timmy, and have him get a taste of shooting long range. I've had the chance to shoot with three of Jerry's four sons now, and they've all been extremely well mannered, all very willing to chip in and pull weight, and all shown mature range safety characteristics. We have some good stills and video of Timmy's work yesterday.

Was a good day guys. (bow)
Different exposures - some flash. It appears differently.

923 grain slug recovered off of a steel target @ 104 yards. Steel plate on legs stuck into the ground. It pounded the plate, bent the legs, and pulled the whole thing out of the ground. Still, it flattened the slug like this and sheared off much of the mass "petals" that develop when the slugs expand on a steel plate. The dome shape fits perfectly into the deformed steel plate. This is on a plate that could move and absorb energy by moving. Were the plate unmovable, the thing would likely have disintegrated. And, the slug flew true, and was easy to place.

I put alot of time into the range tests, the pictures, and then making up the web pages. Sometimes, they sort of fall off the grid, and get lost after some time. I've been looking through older web pages, and ran across these two detailed pages, loaded with pics and targets. Thought I'd link to them again, as I'm working on this group of Bisons.

Thought I'd show you some pics of the Bison work I've been involved in lately. It takes awhile to do this work.

There's still a final round of carving and cosmetic prep. for bluing on all of these parts yet.

In the Bison design, all of the sub-components are MIG welded in special jigs to locate the parts properly. Of course, I had to make up the jigs and tooling. That's one of the behind the scenes details. I made some prototypes, early on, but didn't make the production jigs and fixtures to standardize certain operations. Later, I made those (which takes alot of time). Still, each step of the Bison assembly raises the stakes higher and higher. What was welded and carved in the last step, is now subject to being ruined in the next phase, if anything goes wrong. Etc., and Etc. I keep adding components to components, until I have the whole Bison Receiver assembly complete.

The build process seemed OK, early on, when I was excited about getting the prototypes into the field for testing. It's proven to be pure stress to complete as a project that needs to go out the door. ;) I don't know about you, but what works easily, when it's not so important ... always gives me a fit when it's for real. The welder will always act up when I have a critical weld to make. (excited) Weld up a target to pound with lead ... it will purr along just fine. haha. Such is the shop.

However; the Bisons are getting done. YEAH!!!!!!! I have four of these on the bench now. That's the end of the Bison herd. Hope you enjoyed a look.
It is always fun showing peole what REAL airguns can do! B)

We started with plinking cans at 15-20 yards.

When that got boring we set up some bottles and cans on top of a 5 gallon bucket at 60-70 yards.
In addition to being beautiful rifles, even at that distance both the Appaloosa and the Ranger are tack drivers. (cooler)

I'll post this here on the main page, and then move it over to Gary's Galleries to archive it later.

This is a great 58 caliber in the 600+ fpe range. A bolt action, featuring hard color anodized billet, and carved walnut stock.

Here's a shot Jim took when the gun was being tested at the range, before the billet was anodized. Here you see it in a brushed billet finish.

I carved the Bastone Walnut stock in Oak leaved and Acorns

This was a good look ....

And the gun was very accurate ...

But I could see it this way ... in my mind's eye.

I called this hard color anodized finish ... "Burl".

Detail of the carving.

And the forestock, blending with the Burl billet. I thought this came out really nice.

One of the benefits of hanging around for decades, is that you get to "Archive" your earlier work. ;)

I ran across the stored posters I used to use at knife shows. This pic of me working, would have been taken about 1978.

Through a series of circumstances, I realized that I had retained a collection of my earliest knives (dating back to about 1970). Around 1989, I decided to group them in a display case. The walnut carved panels of the case, lay unfinished on the office shelves for the next 15 years or so. I eventually completed the case, made up a document booklet with relevent facts on each knife. It's now with a collector of my work.

The case is solid walnut (some which my grandfather cut in his day). I deeply relief carved the case.

Bound the booklet in leather, and tied it thru an oversized elk stag button.

The booklet contains a story on each knife.

And made wooden hinges for the case.

It's fun to look back thru the archived pics, and run across this stuff. This was some of the materials trapped in the hard drive of that IBM laptop which developed issues. Thanks Jim. I'm glad we were able to retrieve the materials.

Hope you enjoy seeing different things. (bow)

Looking thru more older files. Came across this range test from a Bison 58.

This rifle was set up with open sights. It so happens that I can see like an eagle at distance.

Kelly was my helper and photographer this day.

I set out a full can of soda. QUITE an impact

QUITE a bit of hydroshock there. Just ripped the can to shreds.

Note the exact IMPACT point. Preserved in the aluminum shreds. That was amazing.

Then, I moved the target waaay out. I actually had to "phone home" back to the bench to make adjustments, and have Kelly take a telephoto pic of me over there on the hill.

And, here was the result. A nice group of Barnes 469 grain slugs - at 203 yards by laser, and with open sights.

Look how the bullet flew the 203 yards, penetrated the hard backer OSB board, and STILL split the 2 by 4 support post.

In some conversations lately, folks have mentioned the possibility of seeing groups of Barnes guns together, in one spot. I thought I'd dig up some pics I know I have somewhere.

I'll edit and add to this as I find them.

These were from a customer sponsored pistol shoot.

The one on the left is the 45 caliber Hoss, the other three are Victory 32's. Stainless on Stainless, Brass on Stainless, and Blue on Blue. All three Victory were shrouded.

The Hoss .... definitely NOT shrouded!!! (excited)

Hunting for more while I take a break.

Found this quicker than I thought ..... it's a group of guns from a private shoot a customer sponsored a few years back. These were the customer owned Barnes guns that showed up.

Range Test: 32 Delta SS (23 replies)

I got out to the range yesterday with the Delta 32 SS. It was one cold morning - but the sun was out, and there was no mud! yeah.

I set up with the gun mount and the chrono, and recorded some numbers. I'm tuning the rifle for the best string of shots above spec.

The peak of the curve yesterday, was the Barnes Falcon @ 77.3 grains, going 885 fps ... for 134.5 fpe. The single ought (O) buckshot from Hornady, flew @ 988 fps. It makes a good default close range round.

I soon started calling shots. I set up this block @ 50 yards and labeled it. Then proceeded to pop it right in the targeted kill zone.

Shot this excellent group @ 50 yards.

Decided that (since the gun is going to a varmint control officer), I needed a Beaver target.

And popped that right under the ear @ 50 yards!

The big bore bullet trap did a good job of recycling the lead for me too. It turns everything into nice lead flakes.

Good session. The guns ships today.
I hope to get to the range tomorrow. Supposed to be very cold - but that means ... no mud! yeah.

This makes a great handling rifle. Super silent shroud system. Ball bearing spring guide. Two stage trigger. Static internal regulator (additional quiet operation).

Very comfortable grip - right or left hand.

Triple sealed breech. Made to shoot single O buckshot for a quick and cheap default load.

Let's shoot!

One more down.
