This is the model I've spoken of for some time. It's been in testing, and has far and away exceeded my expectations. It's a design which accepts many different caliber barrels. For some caliber choices, a new barrel can simply be threaded into the barrel hub. That would be 25, 308, 8mm, 32, 34, and 38. For larger barrels, a seperate hub can be set into place with one simple bolt. A front barrel ring insert must match the barrel diameter.

It's really the ultimate gadget gun.

a_Orion.jpg

It has sleek lines and shoots excellent from a bi-pod. I've been shooting just off the truck tailgate with the bi-pod to great results.

This one carries a couple of options. The larger caliber is an option. This is also a GS model. The barrel is about 5" longer. It gives a PCP a significant advantage to use the air the power train is producing.

This gun has relief carving about the forestock. The back portions are smoothed and could eventually carry hunt scenes. This gun also features my Color Case Anodizing. This is something that I view as a major breakthrough and I like it, but it's risky and takes a lot of stressful effort. I don't do it on the cheap. I've pretty much given away this feature for years and I can't do that any longer. I've often absorbed the cost of some pretty nice extra features in order to put out a gun more representative of the body of work I wish to have seen.

This one is mine. Don't ask. ;?) I think the last gun that was mine was the Yukon II GS. I shot my buffalo with that gun. Julio owns it now. When I sell my gun, it takes me 3-5 years to get one back. So, when I want to go shooting, I can't. Or else I use a gun that's half built and has a blocked out stock, with a scope stuck on five minutes before. Those are the targets you've seen for 12 years I almost never have one set up so I can just go enjoy it and get familiar with it.

I've decided it's completely absurd that I don't have one. So: there have been a lot of late sessions in this gun to get my work done and this too. Hope most aren't offended, but I'm going around just once too. I'm 57 now. I will hunt with it shortly. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'll post some more as the thread builds. And, I will share the hunt stories, and the testing, as well as future barrel configurations. This will be my test bed now. You recall, I am also working with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources on Md. hunting regulations regarding airgun power standards. It's rather embarrassing to have to borrow a gun to do that.

Hope you like it.

Oh ... it's LIGHT slug is a sort of bullet nose job. In 62 caliber even that weighs 485 grains. It shoots that for 625 foot pounds. Heavier would add up far more. But I'm not so sure it's required. I shot straight thru a Buffalo at 50 yards (ribs and all) with this power range in ... 05 was it? Of course, you may want to shoot something bigger than a Buffalo ... heheheh. ;?)

Always think of something else right away.

Being the GS model ... the barrel is longer ... AND the air tube can be longer. Therefore: that allows the forestock to be longer, if desired. This is the way I envisioned this prototype test gun. It can certainly be shorter ... but this is where I've found max. effeciency, which is what I was after.

I repeat my rant about pundits which tell you there's no way you can hunt with anything except a carbine. When men actually hunted for survival and trade, they used Kentucky long rifles, some of which were far longer than this. So far, I've not gotten hung up on doors or trees. But, ya never know ... ;?) I might ... nowthatIthink

Yes - lighting isn't ideal on these interior shop light phone pics from late one night. I've been doing so many things of late that I have not done a proper session. But - since I'm going hunting, I wanted you to get a look at it first.

Gary

There is a hard sole on the base of the pistol grip. It's linen Phenolic in "natural" color and is therefore about the same color as the Mahogany. If you've read for a while, you'll remember that the Mahogany will oxidize to a more and more rich color over the next couple of years. Some of these stocks are just getting amazing.

Congrats on your first Gary Barnes gun. LOL.

What a beauty and what power. That's just crazy when i hear of a airgun penetrating a buffalo.......WOW!

I will stay tuned on this one. Can't wait to read more about it.

That's a sweet looking rifle there, Mr. Barnes!

I like the 'hump' on the stock, it'll make a nice cheekpiece for scoped use. I know that a lot of shooters like the "American style" stocks with a straight cheek, but unless you're shooting iron sights with a very low sightline most people need more elevation in the cheek to work well with a scope.

This is a sliding breech model, right?

Yes it is a slide breech. I really like that. Very safe. And very compatable to barrel swap out designs. The cheek works just fine. I like it. The gun is very comfortable to shoot. Two stage trigger. Easy to load. I have the port biases to the left
For easy loading.

...a little respect for your decrepit elders youngster. wink

We could start the stories with a case for the rifle. The one ordered never showed in two weeks plus. So we called. Asked status. Was told we'd agreed to it being 7-10 days to ship when we ordered. Ok ... So has it shipped? "no, it's still here". Well we are running out of tine for this trip. Well just have to cancel. "oh really... Well there's a charge to cancel an order". arguing. What is your charge? Well I'll go see. Comes back and says you can cancel cause it's backordered. Really?

So we scramble and drive to a Dicks sporting goods store locally. Where we go thru a crazy process of being shown fabric cases, and small cases, and cases that are not TSA approved.

Short to the end. I have to crate and ship. I have some other things in boxes to ship anyway. Our FedEx account shows us all our stuff will go for $195. Well, it's steep, but it will have to be. But wait! That's three BUDNES days. It's $450 to do it the one day sooner. Great. Never mind. So it's all crated and sent USPS Priority and Express.

Simple. Hey, I have located a great 62" aluminum airline case at Cabeles. Now I find it.

Looking to a great hunt and social time.

Man that turned out nice. Maybe you ought to just leave it with me here in TX for safe keeping. You know so you don't accidentally sell it....yeah, that's it.... So you don't sell it more innocent.

Great looking and mag performing gun Gary! Flows nicely together. Remember to sit way back in the ground blind, and on the left side so you can bring that beast into play. No, I'm not kidding. In the shoot shack at the feeder, I rested the Carnivore (similar sized gun) on the shelf beside me. That way it was ready to go out the shoot window before all the "guests" showed up.

IIRC, the Yukon II had an earlier version of the case hardening as well. You must have a soft spot for that look, is there a story?

For the MD DNR, you are going to make lots of friends Get crackin' if you have them set the minimum with this power range, >625 ft/lbs, 62 cal and a 485 grain slug. Come to think of it, It might just be just deserts for all those who make rules on their shoots just to exclude the best air guns.angry with "no" sign Best send them the pic of Eric's Axis taken with a 45cal 400 ft/lbs, 303 grain combo, for the mere mortal guns.

Hi Kent.
Currently they have a target of 1,200 fpe so I'm slumin' already. "festive"
I'll show them a variety of things as they come available.
We will need to specify Barnes slugs and wear Barnes tees. ;?)

Where I've held the baby, been official photographer, sent pics and movies to all requested, done odd this and that, and had dinner in the base hospital dining room. Were on Fort Bragg. Largest military base by population. Word from home is all I'd going well there. Love it when a plan comes together.

Congrats on the new Grandchild!"festive"

The DNR requires 1200 ft/lbs from the rifles but only stipulates a 40 cal blackpowder pistol with 40 grains blackpowder and a 6 in barrel. That seems a bit weaker than 1200 ft/lbs. I wonder how consistent that is?

Have a great trip Gary!

Thanks Kent.
Hey, remember; I can put any barrel caliber on this gun. And can tune it up or down. I can even pop an 87 caliber on here if I want. So I've got anything they may want to see in power ranges. Now, this would probably max out a bit before 1,000 fpe with the heaviest 87s, but I can probably tune from 100-900 with little serious trouble.

You'd have to put the slide for the slide breech on a diet to make the 87 seems to me. But that's a big range! The current 62 looks like the perfect fit.

Yup. Gary always keeps the airgun he's built for himself.

Until he builds the next one.eye rolling smiley What's the line about the cobbler and the shoes?

I think Jerry is in charge of the betting pool to see how long this one will stay in Garys hot little hands.grinning smiley
