Re: 150 yard hare tonight

150 yard hare tonight

I achieved a goal tonight...a clean kill at 150 yards with the Falcon .22.
I wandered out on the back deck after tea and thought I saw a reddish brown shape way over on the hillside across the valley. My eyes not being what they used to be, I dragged out the binocs and sure enough it was a hare hunkered down. So out with the Falcon and rangefinder. I set up on my shooting bench, using just the bipod, and lasered the hare at exactly 150 yards and dialled it up on the scopeknob:

The hare was on the hillside about at the point marked by the end of the barrel in this shot:

It was almost calm, the kind of stillness that follows a thunderstorm we had had late in the afternoon. My first shot went high, due to my attempt at doping for the light wind. The hare flinched but stayed put. I aimed the next shot at centre mass and the hare shrieked, did a back flip and rolled down the hill before coming to a dead stop.

It's a looong way back to the shooting position:

Needless to say I am stoked. My previous best with the Falcon was around 140 yards; but I knew it had the grunt for a 150 yard kill In the right conditions as long as I did my bit.
Cheers

Hi Neil,

Well done! An amazing feat!!

Hard to believe that pellet will go the distance. Fine gun. Very well documented.

I agree that the setting always takes my breath. What a marvelous place.

Thanks so much for posting!

Best,
Gary

Are you using regular diablo style pellets? Amazing range and power, if so.

Hi Sean
Standard diablos...15.9 grain BSA Wolverines (=JSB Exacts). The gun is shooting these at 860 fps (around 26 fpe) and according to Chairgun they deliver 8.22 fpe at 150 yards, so still plenty of energy.

Hi Neil,

Amazing what you can do with 8 fpe! Most of my slugs make more energy then that when I drop a slug on my foot! LOL! But you have them come in like Smart Bombs. Good equipment BUT not without the practice and skills you have under your belt. Well done again!

Hi Neil,

I will start by congratulating you for your beautiful home and place. Now, the way that you explained the shot makes it look too easy. There are a lot of variables involved and you certainly know your stuff. Great shot and please keep us posted on your next outings.

Gidday Julio
Chairgun is a great programme and takes the guesswork out of long shots like this. And it helps to have relatively calm winds, unusual here!

Great shot Neil! Pretty soon you're going to have to start over, having met all the goals you set for this gun!

I agree Jerry!

If Neil shoots any farther ... the pic of his house, from the bunny kill, will become so small as to be unlivable! stunned

Well Jerry, there's still another 25 yards left on the scope tape.....shooter

Gary, you had me worried for a bit, but I just tested your theory and found that the house gets bigger the closer I get back to it. It's like magic!nerd
