Re: Custom BAM B50

Custom BAM B50
September 30, 2012 09:36PM
this is a project I finished a few years back, .22 BAM B50. At the time I think it was pushing 32g Eun jins at 945fps. I've recently wanted to continue on with the installation of a custom breech, barrel and more brass fittings. This was my first attempt at relief carving and this time around I want to try my hand at engraving brass. I'm going to add a few more carved panels. not sure how long it will take as I no longer have direct access to my shop. I expect it to be my winter project.

Welcome Jess,

Nice work. You had 'em all drulin' on the keyboard just with the pc. of wood. Hahah.
That's a lot of sanding, you agree?
Enjoy.

(Personally, I wear Gray cotton socks ... but ... it's an old school thingie .... hahahah).

Thanks for Posting,
Gary

Thanks. Most of the sanding came at the end. The vast majority of it was cut away on the bandsaw, then the big gouges and a belt sander. then a lot of initial shaping with a cheapo rasp. I did some final sanding then the last thing was scrapers. I'd never used scrapers before but I understood that it cleared the wood grain and helped get a nice finish.

I designed this breech several years back. A fellow airgun enthusiast offered to machine it for me and he did an awesome job. Unfortunately it's sat around since 2008 and it's gotten a little rusty in spots. I cleaned up the rust and removed all the machine blue. I picked up my brass parts from the waterjet cutter today: a barrel band, oak-leaf blanks for the relief inserts and a new cocking lever. A slot has been machined into the air tube for the new coking nob.

I need to clean things up and begin working in the details.

Looks good how do you plan on attaching the brass inserts? I think thatshould match the trigger guard nice . once you put a good polish on it

it will be a tight fit, so I was thinking epoxy and maybe small brass rivets. I'm open to suggestions.

Looks very nice. You might consider small machine screws. Probably I'd look at 1-72 size. Tip - all the charts will give you a drill size that is too small. That stresses taps too much and you get high breakage. For most applications of tiny screws like this, you require far less thread engagement then the charts recommend.

looks like I can get 1-72 machine screws from my local Spaenaur. thanks for the suggestion.

I would go with glue but i do know that Gary has used some low temp glues that you can remove easy with a heat gun in case you ever have to take apart which you know will eventually happen . Is that other curved piece of brass for some sort of spur trigger guard or what? Was also wondering if you see some metal carving in the future for those accent pieces?

Thanks
Kurt

the curved piece you see is the bolt handle. i want to carve a spiral type design in it. The intent is to relief carve the oak leaf. I just had the waterjeft do most of the hardwork and I get to do the fun stuff.

4 years is enough time.

I blew the dust off the old parts and began some final touches. All the brass hardware needed polishing, the breech and barrel needed bluing and the oak leaf inlay needed to be secured. I still need to make the handle for the bolt action and assemble the trigger.

Ill do some testing before the snow flys. Was also thinking about selling it lol.

Jess
You can't sell it till you shoot it . It's hard letting things set for a time . You loose interest BUT ifin you test a few rounds you get back into it I'm sure . That's a heck of a scope too !

Thanks
Kurt

I spun he knobs on the drill press and soldered them together with some brass tube. Turned out pretty good.

Tofazfou mistaking your work for Gary's was actually quite a compliment IMHO!

Fantastic work!
