From 1-2000 ..... the 45 Alpine. One of the first really magnum power 45s of the modern airgun Renaissance. About 530 fpe IIRC. Quite a few unique Barnes features.

It had aquired some "Range Rash" having been thru a couple of owners. It was also cosmetically damaged as result of a late evening storm at the range. We decided to tear it down, reseal, and restore it. Various pcs. were done at various times. Jim has waited patiently. It's complete now, and better than new.

OK, that does it!

Gary, send me the gun quick! laughing I don't know if I can take watching Jim shove ball after ball down that barrel!

That is such a pretty gun with details to admire everywhere you look. Really, who decorates stuff inside the trigger guard?

When I first saw it on the old site several years ago. I thought what a beautiful gun. I thought I would never see it up close. Then when it showed up at Joe's place and I got to shoot and admire it. That was over the top. Take real good care of it Jim. Dory

Hi Gary,

In my opinion the Alpine could be a Barnes’s Signature Series. There is no doubt in my mind that this is one, if not the most beautiful rifle ever built by you. I know that every Barnes’s rife has its uniqueness and that is part of which makes this rifles so desirables. BUT, when you conceived this rifle in your mind, I’m pretty sure that you were veeeeery HAPPY. There is no other way to come up with such a master piece.

Jim, congratulations and enjoy it.

Thank you guys. Very nice to hear that you've enjoyed it.

I was laying out some more carving, before I came in a while ago.

Carving 003.JPG

Tough day on the old hip today. I wanted to stay and lay out some more ... but it wasn't having it. As per recommendation of specialist, I got one of those inversion tables. It's made really nice. Works slick. Seems very stable - even comfortable. I think it's gonna be helpful for pain maintenance, as it's used for what's called "decompression of the spine". No - not hanging like a bat yet. hahaha. Trying it yesterday, at a very conservative angle, it did seem to relieve pain almost right away. Today, having carefully viewed the video enclosed ... and attaining a dangerous degree of knowledge on the subject ... I did a minor rotation exercise at the same minor angle (as recommended for 1st week routine newbies). Wrong. Felt good then ... ah ... later .... excited Don't do that. I will learn. winking smiley

Getting in some useful work each day, in segments. thumbs up

Vintage Barnes...50% high-performance bigbore, 50% baroque detailing, 50% OCD-level attention to detail, and another 50% perennial Barnes-style uniqueness.

Hi Don,

That one struck a nerve with just about everybody that's ever seen it. I should whip up a crate of those .... nowthatIthink ... USA! USA!

BTW ... I got the five inch needles in my back again today. As I lay there on the table, and the Doc was driving them in under live X-Ray .... he'd occasionally hit a really sensitive spot. I'd flinch, and he'd know he'd hurt me pretty good. He'd "Comfort Me" with saying .... "Sorry Gary ... I'm very close to your SPINE NOW!" The guy has a real way with words .... hahahah

The injections were good. Relief already. Can't wait to get one of these guns to show that I've been talking about for months. And .. to get Joe's 50 caliber assembled and back to the range.

Just a note or two about the trigger system on this gun. You may not remember. It's quite a package.

If you want, you can fire the gun with the front trigger. You just pull it back and it fires at something around a pound of pull.

If you want, you can use the SAME trigger, and push it forward until it gives a soft "click". At that point, the hair trigger is armed. Then the rear trigger has been activated. A breath or two on it will fire the gun.

Set down with a pencil and paper and scratch out a mechanism that will do that ... wink . I know, I'm a wiseguy ... but, that's all I get. The guns leave here, and I pay the electric bill and health insurance. Very rewarding. eye rolling smiley That's why I enjoy the discussions and posts here. smileys with beer

Thanks Don,

Hey - first of all ... I sincerely appreciate the fact that when you come and read, you drop a few lines of text too. That's very courteous.

You know, right now ... I am feeling pretty good again. The Epidural injections (two double sets already - one set left to this series) have worked very well. And, I appreciate the thought of taking some time off. You are right ... I could really, really use it. I'm fried. However; I just had my four weeks vacation. It was called screaming pain like I've never had before. I could hardly work at all. So; vacation over now ... I'm back in the shop. Hey - next thing you know ... everybody is gonna be starting a custom airgun business! Bang!

Hey ... have you watched that series "Swamp People?" My DVR caught the marathon or something, and I had the whole series. I credit it with saving my life while I hurt so bad. It was interesting to see the complexity of the society which can earn most of it's yearly income in 30 days. To see the equipment, the guy that made the aluminum boats, the meat and processing plant, and the devotion to family. It was enjoyable. I still might have to rewatch a couple of those.

Best,
Gary

Julio,

Phase one of the condo crisis has indeed ended but it starts a whole host of other issues. I won't bore you with the details other than to say it will take another 6 weeks before I can start to get comfortable; the photos are stock footage from previous adventures.

The snake. I was on a pitcher takin' outin' and ran across this freshly killed viper(Water Moccasin) so I took a picture of it as an example of the wildlife one is likely to encounter in my playground.

Gary, I'm thinking about doctorin' some of the photos to remove a few teeth.

Don't you just love seeing photos of guys standing there smiling for the camera with some sort of dangerour critter in the background?

If your brain works like mine, you see the next few shots in the sequence running through your mind automatically. The next imaginary photo has the critter getting a bit closer, then in the next shot it's WAY closer, and you start to think "dang, that critter has much bigger teeth than I thought", and then right at the end the guy suddenly figures out that he's moving a link down the food chain.eye popping smiley

Maybe I've been watching too many shows on the Animal Planet channel...or was it "Americas funniest home videos"? I guess it doesn't matter, same effect either way. winking smiley

Hey some babie,s....Have some picture,s of some the same size as my 12 foot kayak. I scare my wife when i get the close up shot. Hillsborough river has alot of them. Hey Dory, you are invited anytime, but after seeing the picture of your kayak i would be envious for sure, very beautiful ride. It is so and peaceful on the river and i alway,s have my cold steel blade you can shave with. Of course it will not come close to what Gary can make. Went to silver spring,s and the monkey,s are strange there and have lived there since the old Tarzan movie,s. Camped out there and they make some weird noise at night.db

I do watch some of swamp people on netflix and they are true gator hunter,s. It is amazing how they can kill a 12 foot with a 22 rifle. I would visit a co worker down in the ocala area. The firefighter,s would perform controlled burn,s and they dredge long ditch,s. They would throw down piece,s of wood so they could walk through the swamp, and the cotton mouth. Southern name, would hide under the wood. I would shoot them and cut off their head and open the mouth with a piece of wood and lay it in a fire ant bed. about three day,s later it was a perfect skeleton. And yes i am aware that it still was deadly, fang,s stil held venom. that is what happen,s when you live out in the wood,s not much to do.db
