Another Rainy Day at the Range
September 06, 2011 01:47AM
Hello, all,

Happy Labor Day.
Off to the range this cloudy morning with tropical weather in the offing.
46 Nitro Express.
Shooting from the bench with regulator set at 3000 psi.
Range shoots slightly uphill.
Barnes Raptor 450 grain, home cast 20:1, sized .464".
Velocity around 800 fps from prior testing.
No wind.
Humidity about 90% with occasional downpours. Condensation everywhere, but...put her through her paces (shot under a shed).
Shot a while to get the feel of the trigger.
Set targets at 25, 50, 100 and 150 yards. Zeroed scope at 25 yards to see how much drop I would get. 3 shot groups.

VERY ROUGH RESULTS:

25 yds, point of aim, group 1.5".
50 yds, 1.25" drop (about 2 moa), group 1.75".
100 yds, 13.25" drop (about 13 moa), group 3.5"
150 yds, 25.25" drop (about 30 moa), no group because I was running out of air, me and the rifle because the creek was rising!

Can't wait to try again when the weather improves a bit.

Hello Hugh,

Well, it would appear that the rifle, having shot wonderfully with other slugs (you're supposed to mention that point Hugh ... whistling ) heheheh ... doesn't like that slug in that size.

I'd have suggested those sized larger. Try the .465" The only one I'd suggest at .464" would be the long K-8 slug. Rational being that the longer slug will have more bearing surface rings ... thus, each one will not need to be cut as deeply. The aggrigate effect will be to steer the slug well, with less drag.

Now - on this Raptor ... with three rings ... the rings must be cut deeper each. Try them at .465" and then try them "as cast" too.

Hope it helps. thumbs up

Thanks for the post!

Gary
