Around 1989, I was a Featured Guest Lecturer at the Ashokan Bladesmithing Seminar in Upstate New York. I decided to devote my lecture to reminding the Smiths and Attendees to “Keep the Fun and Practically in their Work.” I made a Saddle Back Folder as an example. I passed it around. The other Bladesmiths and Myself were daily involved in making High dollar Art Knives for Collectors. A knife such as I made was rather ... unworthy and unexpected. In fact ... I’d engraved upon the blade the words “Faux Pas” to indicate that I knew it was unexpected. Ha.

As the knife passed from row to row ... the World Renowned Bladesmiths ... became young boys. Smiles Broke Out. Chatter began. Thumb’s Up and encouraging reactions filled the room. It seemed we all needed a bit of fun and a Faux Pas of our own.

Do you need one? Blade steel recycled from high production commercial band saw blades. .035” stock. HOWEVER; I don’t just grind an edge on the steel. I apply a special heat treat that I developed for the steel. I bought these blades about 1979-80 at a Salvage Yard in Frederick, Maryland. I’ve metered them out thru the years. My private stash. It’s good steel.

The back springs will either be O-1 Tool Steel if Heat Blued ... or A-2 Stainless If Bright.

Did I say .... DID I SAY ..... $250us FOR THIS KNIFE!!!! Drop marker here. First come. Put your date stamp here.

I’ve tested the blades. They will cut the Cold Colled Steel Bar. Now ... these will not be $1,200 blades and the knife finish, polish, etc., won’t be $1,200 Knives. But they are worth a heck of a lot more than $250.

The mechanism is very crisp. Very precise. Just a fine quality. I’ve perfected the design. I’ve carried and used my Faux Pas for nearly 30 years now. Hope you love yours as much.

Now for more Pics!!!

Gary

Btw. The blade has hard brass wear/stabilizing washers/bushings. This makes the mechanize smooth and lively. This is a REAL pocket knife. It’s NOT just a friction folder. The blade snaps shut. Locks open. Very nice long life tool.

That's a super deal for a Christmas gift . And who doesn't like wood ! Are making a series of them ( limited edition of course ) ? Those blades look really nice . It's seems like your down playing the material but man saw blade especially from 80's is good metal I'm sure .

Thanks
Kurt

Hi Kurt,

I’m saying they make a great working knife. I’m just being thorough. Any simplier designed knife isn’t the last word, or there wouldn’t be anything else for experienced bladesmiths to do. And, I did explain, I had to be able to find the correct heat treat to bring out the steelfor use as a knife. A bandsaw blade has an edge section tempered to a very hard degree. But the body of the blade can’t be that hard, or the blade would snap. So the steel can’t only be sharpened, it must be heat treated. And to do that, you must have a quality steel which you understand.

I’ll make more if these sell quickly. They are only worth making, if I know they’ll find a quick pocket.

Thanks Kurt! You need several of these. Haha. Pass them out at work. They’ll love ya!
