Engraving progression ...

As you read in the previous post; I do so many different things in connection with making all the parts for my PCP rifles, it's usually quite some time between using a skill set ... and doing it the next time. It could be a year between, as I prepare other parts for a collection of work.

I have not done single point hand engraving for some time. I felt I should practice some, to brush up on the skills before cutting customer parts.

I did some sketching ...

Then I drew the pattern on the part. A billet tower for a Yukon Orion.

I started cutting the backbone lines with a single point graver.

I finished these main lines. Then erased the ink.

I worked on the background.

Then added detail, shading, and refined the engraving to it's current state. It's not complete, but close.

Then, there's the other side! winking smiley

Beautiful artwork Gary!sunny Your metal carving has always been my favorite and this piece shows why. Your organic symmetry and depth of presentation really makes it "POP"boing. It's neat how you have the carving over flowing its frame giving the impression of even more depth.artist

Gary,

Very impressive as always. What kind of hours are put into one side? Must be a considerable amount of time?

Thanks for sharing with us.

Just enough to finish it, and no more. winking smiley. Hey, common Pedro, you know you can't answer questions like that. footinmouth. How long does it take Charlie Daniels to play Devil went down to Georgia? Three minutes? Doesn't tell you a thing ... Haha. It's all relative to skill, experience, mood, and just the flow of the work that day.

But, since you asked .... 9 hours and 17 minutes. thumbs up. Next time it could be 7 hours and 12 minutes or 19 hours and look like crap. That's the "hand" part of the "hand"made ya know. smileys with beer

Gary,

I know it isn't fair to ask. For us that have never done anything like it, to have an idea what it actually takes to do the engraving makes us appreciate it that much more? If that makes sense?

Thanks for sharing, nice to be able to see the artistic qualities that you bring to your work. take a bow

Have a great week!

Nice! I particularly like the way the scrollwork wraps around the pin/bolt hole.

Is the background 'stippling' hammered work, or carved with a burr?

Hi Sean.
I like the design to stand proud of the background, so ive carved it out with rotary tools. Then I stipple it with the burr. Gives a relief with more punch.

Any more depth on that, and you'll need a step ladder to work on it. grinning smiley
