Excellent video Gary! Nice showing of craftsmanship and quality. Those are the details that sometimes are overseen. Glad that you took the time to explain them in such detail.

Wow, tough blade! Are all your blades made with the same toughness?

Hi Sal,

Same care. There are several different alloys. Different blade grinds and edge shapes. So; a thin pen knife blade won't be set up the same as a heavier knife. I've learned how to get the best out of the alloys I use.

When you get into Damascus steel - there's another whole world there.

Let me toss in a short-ish story. I'm sure .... hey - let me just start a new thread. This MIGHT be of some interest. Although ... who knows ... you post a VIDEO of a handmade knife blade slicing an index card - then slicing steel - then back to slicing the card. The edge is unharmed. I'd think THAT would be pretty darned fascinating.

Thanks Sal, (Today got totally eaten up tracking down a welding gas supplier to fill tanks - long story).

You know Gary, when most people feel like whittling with their pocket knives, they just find a nice piece of wood. winking smiley

You see Sean ....

This is why I need conversation with people on the "outside". To keep "perspective". To be reminded when I stray from the well worn path. ..,

But Gary, if we let you talk to people "on the outside", how are we going to keep you in the shop all the time? SOMEONE has to keep the Shopsquatch fed and watered, after all. crazy

From what I hear he's not a complicated beast to maintain; keep the BBQ shrimp and iced tea flowing and he's pretty much good. Well, that and various bits of aluminum, brass and nickle sheets, bars of cold-rolled steel, seasoned walnut, spring wire, stuff like that.

I'm motivated to go whittle some steel but I can't find a bar (of steel) I like!
