Alot of you commented about the background I choose to use when completing the high relief carving on the Appaloosa 25 SS.

We started with a pencil sketch - each an individual. Removed the bulk background, refined everything, carved in three dimensional detail, and then began the finishing process.

After many coats of stock oil, and detail coloration ... we ended with a high contrast relief carving.

Here's a close detail of the background. It has a neat effect, as your eye picks up flecks of color, rather than just a monotone.
