Beautiful knife. That style looks like it would transfer well to a sweet little fixed blade too.

Hi Bob,

The ripple pattern is grown into the wood. It’s not a factor of the cut direction. Although, you can enhance the “Chatoyance” by the direction you cut it.

You have me wondering now if and Oak (if quarter sawn) will exhibit the oatmeal flecks throughout.

This is what you see called “Tiger Stripe” Walnut.

Thanks Much!

Thks Steve,

I’ll have to make some fixed blades.

Do you guys like Kydex sheaths?

Have any samples? I've got hybrid holders for my EDC. Probably leather, kydex, plastic? I get confused.

At the risk of showing my hermit status .... “EDC ???”

Regarding sheaths. It’s very easy to bury the budget with a leather sheath on a simple knife. Unless you rivet. Two needle lock stitch sewing, recessed, with sixty holes, thru a welt (extra edge leather piece to protect the stitching), takes much more time then imagined. Handmade sheaths seldom have machine stitched needle work. Then too, if you wet mold leather to partially cover and grab the handle/guard area ... more time. Allowances for leather shrinkage. And stamp or tooling of course is time. The 1940s style flat leather, covering blade only, with a snap or button strap over the guard and a simple loop on the back is the design that came about from economy. But I’m not sure if it is well received now. Maybe. I think many Knife makers find “sheath people” who specialize.

The practical sheath for me would be the molded Kydex sheath. Riveted. Tough. Secure. Waterproof. The right ratio of time to knife for economy.

Thanks Steve,
Gary

Oh, and maybe you could make a plain, budget type.
