Re: A successful range session with the .50 cal

A successful range session with the .50 cal
July 11, 2009 08:14AM
Well, I tried out a series of slugs in my ClarkArms .50 cal this afternoon, at 50 yards

The 250 grain R.E.A.L's and the 465 grain S&W 500's didn't shoot at all well, then things got better, Jerry's hand-crafted 220 grain HP's, based on the 250 grain R.E.A.L's, did this

then I shot these 230 grain "Cotton reels" cast by a friend of mine here in NZ (230 grain, 733 fps, 274 fpe)

and next, these 330 grain Maxi-ball HP's from Bob Vogel (330 grain, 624 fps, 285 fpe)

Finally, I have learnt how to shoot this big bore, and found some very well-matched slugs for it. I'm a happy chap!hot smiley

Dude!

You are there!!!! Lock that thing in the closet!!! You're DONE.

Excellent shooting. You've found the perfect match (several actually).

Excellent range session. You're approached the whole experiment just right. Well done.

I was sort of hoping you'd order a thousand of those custom drilled Jerry hollow points though .... rolling happy smiley That would keep Jerry off the streets for months. haha.

Thank goodness there are .50 HP's available that do so well! Now I can get back out on the street...laughing again

Well done Neil. Those are some great groups there. Time to go hunting!

Thanks Guys! I'm still buzzing the next morning, about the fact that it's all come togetherexcited Next I'll do some BC tests, then I can set up a scope tape (or two) and be ready to knock over some gamefudd
I was religious with your benching advice Gary, and that helped a lot thank you. And Jerry, it's interesting that your custom hollows performed better than the originals....this gun seems to like HP's for some reason! Thanks for being part of my experiment, and at least if you don't have to drill any more you'll be saved a dead fingergrinning smiley

That is very impressive Neil! Was that from the same fill pressure for the 3 shots group? 50 yards .600 in group was almost unheard of for the bigbore. Good job!

Thanks Peter. The gun was tethered for those shots, at 2700 psi. There was still around 12 to 30 fps variation between shots for those maxi-balls, but obviously not enough to affect POI (edit) too much.
As to .600 ctc, well that's good for me, but I think you'll find Gary and Jerry have done a lot better than that!shooter with bench rifle

Great! It's a pleasure to see such successful things... especially when that's done with big bore airguns!
