Re: Hunting with the 20 guage bigbore

Hunting with the 20 guage bigbore
April 19, 2010 01:34AM
I went out hunting yesterday and got .....nothing. I saw a few rabbits but they were out of range, one was at 30 yards running, I swung the shotgun and missed. I think I didn't lead it far enough. Being an air shotgun, the velocity is around 800 fps, compared to the 1300fps with the powder burner, I think I'd need to lead it a couple feet farther. I learned my lesson. Next time......I had fun nonetheless, beautiful outdoors, solitude, saw a few quails I could've got them but they were out of the season. With the single shot air shotgun, when I missed, I was pretty screwed, there's no time to reload, I could have shot it easily with my semiauto powder burner, but that is part of the challenge and fun by choosing my air weapon.
One question, I wonder how much is the lock time on the air shotgun compared to the powder burner affects the lead, I know it's some what slower but I don't know how much.

This is a mountain lion country, a lot of their tracks around, I carried a 10 in blade Bowie Knife, and a handgun just in case.

Beautiful scenery Peter! It seems like there should be a rabbit behind every bush. Of course, when your actually out there you can walk for miles without so much as a glimpse. It's nice that one showed up to tease you and let you get off a shot.fudd It looks like the walk was a nice one.
Thanks for sharing,
Kent

Peter,

I never worry about killing any game either, especially if I'm out in country like that! Where is that?

If there really are Cougars, you won't see the one that gets you.surprised

Kent, there is a lot of jackrabbits, but most of them were out of range for the air shotgun, I try to keep it 35 yards and under.

Lon, it's in Nevada. good thing is it's only 30 minutes drive from the Casinos. About the mountain lions, I know an attack by them is rare, but I'd read enough true stories of the horror attacks and sometimes they actually had eaten people made me to be ready for them and to have peace of mind. There are big cat tracks everywhere.

Tofazfou, anytime buddy, when you're down here in Vegas give me a call, there's a lot jackrabbits and coyotes down here, I saw a few big dens and I also have an electronic call we can blow them away with the bigbores he..he.. and after the hunting you can always try your luck with the Megabuck machine, if you won it would be a couple of hundred million dollares so you can buy any Barnes guns you want lol.

Beautiful place. Boy ... I'd love to have some space like that to shoot. You are fortunate to have access to that.

Thanks for the post Peter!

Gary,
Yeah I feel myself blessed to have a national forest within 30 minutes of drive, it is 20 mile wide and about 50 mile long, a really big place for hunting and shooting.

Jerry,
it is always nice to be able to meet up with forum members for a hunt. Nothing beat sharing the hunt together with the common interest in airgun hunting.

Peter,

Meeting a real guy who shoots real airguns at real targets and going out for a shoot is always a treat! In fact, the whole damn hobby is a treat and enjoying it with another addict ought to be real fun!
