Do you recall that Base Camp Folder that had Phenolic Scales? It had intentionally been made solid and simple to become a work companion. It’s been here for sale quite inexpensively, since August.

Well, it never found a home. And so, I decided to apply a simple upgrade ... which ran away with itself. I took it apart. Maybe we’ll just change the scales. Bone is nice. But preparing bone scales is a chore in itself. I kept in my mind that I may carve them. If so, I’ll need to finish the interior of the knife. Sand and polish the spring underside. Sand and polish the blade tang perimeter. Guess now I have to sand and polish the blade bevels. Well ... really should file cut the liners. And then, of course ... apply filework to the spring back! But, now the spring is hardened. I must use grinder and diamond files to do the work.

Now to carve those scales. Let’s see the work. The Wharncliff Folder should be done today. It’s quite nice too.

Oh ... more than likely, I’ll stain the bone a medium honey brown. You can’t keep a carved white bone surface. One fleck of any substance glares out. It’s nearly impossible to buff a carved white surface. A new buff and white compound, and you still usually wind up with a stain. The honey color dye highlights the grain of the bone too. And by polishing, you put a sheen on the topmost surfaces which contrasts with the matte finish within the depths of the carving.

That looks amazing ! I can see right though your thumb . Those oak leaves and acorns are crazy good looking. That honey color should set it off perfect.
Have you ever used coffee to die materials ?
I’ve used it on deer antler where I cut or sanded. It wouldn’t get very dark for me but was cool . Do you have to infuse the die in that stabilizing vacuum canister or does it stain easily ?

It’s a special Dye Kurt. Penetrates like crazy. Extremely permanent.

Note another upgrade. Milled rotational trunnions for the blade. Sweetens the action.

Documented story too. This is the knife with the Prototype Ice Axe thru the Ornate “B” instead of the traditional Quillion Dagger thru the B.

Assembling/riveting now.
