46 Caribou - 100 Yard Range Report

Got a nice mail from Julio. He had the 46 Caribou at the range, and was moving out to 100 yards.

Copy:

Hello Gary:

Last Saturday had a chance to go to the range with the Caribou and had a lot of
fun. First, I started the session zeroing the scope at 50 yds. and then moving
to the 100 yds. Hey, what happened to the 65 yds., 75 yds. and 85 yds? I don’t
know apparently they are out of the equation…Heh, heh, heh…

The first two groups shot at 50 yds, were good ones. This was one of those days
that everything is coming together without much effort, so far. On my second
three shot group I shot a fourth slug after adjusting the scope and I hit the
bulls eye, so I decided it was time to move to 100 yds.

There I shot a few targets and my best group is the one shown in the picture.
This was a reality check for me; there I realized how tough it must be for you
and Jerry to be shooting those excellent groups at 150 yds and above.
Definitively, shooting good groups at 50 yds. and trying to replicate them at
100 yds. is not twice as difficult. At least it’s three to four times harder, so
I suppose that moving to 150 yds and 200 yds as you have being doing lately must
be exponentially tougher. It’s not just that the rifle is capable of reaching
those distances, it’s also the level of skills required to accomplish the
task. Gary, Jerry and all the intrepid shooters in this forum accept my sincere
compliments to all of you for all the great targets shown on the web shot
further than 100 yds.

After a while I started shooting some dual spinner steel targets. Enclosed you
will see a picture that shows what was left of a 306 grains slug after hitting
one of the steel targets at 100 yds. For reference I compared it to a nickel
and they are close in diameter, but it was so flat that it was half the thickness of
the nickel. This slug is still keeping a lot of energy at 100 yds.

I ran out of Bishops, so a slug order with Surefire casting is on its way.

Best,

Julio

End Copy: The pics will explain themselves with Julio's text. Thanks for the post Julio! Excellent shooting too!!

Great shooting Julio! That 100 yard group is outstanding. It seems that everytime you go to the range, you shoot at least one trophy group. I think there are a lot of us that wish they always had something to take a picture of when they go shooting!

This post reminds me that this site probably has more pictures of actual groups (and really good groups) than any of the airgun sites. Some of the really huge sites probably have more groups in the archives but when it comes to big bores and great groups, the majority of the photo evidence seems to be here. Amusingly enough, the groups I do see posted on those other sites are from our regulars!

Of course, I read a lot about great power and accuracy but rarely does the magic gun have an owner with a camera... Or the owner can make 14,000 posts yet not know how to upload a picture...

My point? This site is where you find facts and realistic claims backed up by photos and evidence. As a small group (many of the members here have actually met) we have the luxury of knowing that we're reading and viewing input from people we know and trust. Some of the huge sites seem to be focused more on avoiding conflict than posting reality. I've seen way too many wild claims without evidence or witness posted and any question about that is treated as an affront to the the most important value of harmony. Aparently, being accepting of baloney is more important than not spreading baloney!

I'd have to cherry-pick from a dozen groups to get one that nice at a hundred yards, and that's with my .308 powdeburner with a 9x scope!

Great work there, Julio.
